  4. Project Update #2: Highlands United Methodist Church Front Entrance

On April 27, 2013, P-tec installed brand new LED Wall Packs above two entrances of the historic Highlands United Methodist Church. The following pictures show the installation process at the main entrance to the church.

The old fixtures did not work, were massive, and weighed around 30 pounds each.

As with the 30W Wall Pack, the 60W Wall Pack was light-weight and designed to make installation a snap.

  5. Project Update: Highlands United Methodist Church in Denver, Colorado

On April 27, 2013, P-tec installed brand new LED Wall Packs above two entrances of the historic Highlands United Methodist Church. The following pictures show the side-entrance installation process.

The existing lighting fixtures were not functioning and the church was concerned about nighttime security around the premises.

Upon removal of the bulky, older fixture, P-tec’s electrician, Mike Berumen, noted that the LED Wall Pack was much lighter and easier to work with.

Completing the install of the 30W Wall Pack was a breeze.

The LED Wall Pack transformed the space surrounding the side entrance. It created a beautiful daylight/natural white that enveloped the entrance area, but did not extend far enough to disturb the neighbors.

  10. What you need to know before buying LED Lamps, LED Light Bulbs, or LED Tubes

LED Lighting is the most exciting and promising technology in today’s lighting industry, and it is poised to be a dominant force within a matter of years. This, however, does not mean that it is right for everyone. There are important factors to consider before you purchase LEDs for your home or business.

    Color Temperature

Many people still have the misconception that LED products like LED light bulbs only emit unwelcoming, cold, blueish light. While this may have been true in 2007, LED lamps and luminaires have come a long way. Products ranging from LED T8 tubes to LED A19 Light Bulbs are now able to match the warm, comfortable color temperatures of incandescent and fluorescent lights by using high-quality Surface Mount LEDs from respected manufacturers.

Before ordering a fluorescent or incandescent-replacing LED light, think about the following things:

    • What ambiance are you trying to create? (Warm? Neutral? Crisp?)
    • What kind of room will this light be going into? (2700K Warm/White works well for living rooms and bedrooms. 4000K Natural White may work well for office buildings and kitchens)
    • What is the approximate color temperature of the light you want to replace?

We recommend this LED Light Bulb for most rooms and hallways (manufactured by our friends at Toshiba).

Cost and ROI of LED Products

The upfront costs of LED lights are definitely worth considering. A retrofit to LED Lighting may not be worth the expenditure to some, but we believe the Return on Investment may change your mind. By now you know how much more eco-friendly LEDs are than your average incandescent or fluorescent light, so let’s just cut to the chase. Here are some questions to keep in mind while you consider your purchase:

    • What it is your budget for new lighting
    • Should I buy one LED product at a time or all at once?
    • How long are you willing to wait to see a full return on investment?
    • How much energy you save by switching to LED?
    • Have you calculated your energy savings and payback?

    Installation of LED Lights

In most cases, all you’ll need to know is how to screw-in a light bulb. LED Light Bulbs and LED Lamps are designed to be drop-in replacement of your existing lights (i.e. the base-type and bulb type match what you already have). A notable exception to this rule are our LED T8 Tubes. They do not require a ballast to operate, so when you replace your existing fluorescent tubes with LED replacements, be sure to cut the ballast.
